This course is not a 'think and therefore it shall be' or 'manifestation' approach to childbirth since one cannot 'think away' discomfort or 'think relaxation' and thus it will be. Rather, it is a course which focuses on the physiology of fear and how to optimize the functioning of our built-in system which enhances relaxation, reduces fear and reduces pain. Fear during birth causes pain by the release of catecholamines. With the elimination of fear & deep relaxation during birth, a different chemical response comes into play (endorphins) that relax muscles & create a sense of calm & a decreased awareness of pain.
Prenatal classes taught by an expert instructor
My unique experience allows me to be able to provide expert advice with regards to all aspects of pregnancy, labour, birth & postpartum maternal/newborn care. I've been a midwife for nearly 23 years & have attended nearly 1000 births. I'm also a registered nurse (since 1994). I was the Head Midwife at Niagara Health (2008-2020); I've been a tutor with the McMaster University Midwifery Program since 2001 & I developed the Birth Unafraid Program in 2015.
Women & a support person will attend 3 classes where there is a focus on how the body works during birth; techniques & tools to assist with having a calm, peaceful birth with decreased discomfort; a review of breastfeeding and how to bathe your newborn.
Birth Unafraid is a childbirth education program focused on how to eliminate fear of birth & how your mind & body can work together to experience decreased discomfort during your birth.
